Securely bolt honeycomb panels in aircraft interiors

On the one hand, components in aircraft should be as light as possible. But on the other, they must also be able to withstand very high loads in normal operation. Cabin interiors such as toilet housing assemblies, kitchens or partitions must therefore be securely fixed.

Almost every visible cabin module inside the aircraft consists of so-called honeycomb sandwich components and is manufactured by means of honeycomb potting. The honeycomb structure, the honeycomb panel, forms the core. The advantage of this design: The parts are very light and still have a very high inherent rigidity.

So-called inserts are inserted into the sandwich components for later installation of cabin modules inside the aircraft. They are used for bolting or as a form-fit connection of the individual boards and panels. However, these inserts barely find any purchase in the honeycomb core of the components, rendering potting with epoxy or polyurethane resin necessary – the so-called insert potting.

In this application, the inserts are placed into prepared holes in a plane or perpendicular to the honeycomb structure. To ensure the inserts are firmly locked into position, adhesive is dispensed into the gap between the insert and the honeycomb structure. The material fills the cavities and enables stable bonding of the inserts.

Using the eldomix metering and mixing system, the material – a polyurethane or epoxy resin – can be injected directly into the opening by means of a gun or integrated into an automated process. The eldomix ensures processing of the potting compound is clean and efficient during this process as well as providing a continuous supply of material.
